Routine Eye Care Preserves Your Sight
The leading causes of vision loss and blindness in the United States are age-related eye diseases. But with early diagnosis and quick treatment, vision loss related to eye diseases can often be slowed or prevented.
Many eye diseases advance without early symptoms, meaning you can go years without realizing you have a problem. This makes routine eye exams incredibly important to have. Even if you feel fine, your eyesight is strong, and you don’t need glasses, a comprehensive eye exam can reveal eye health problems you didn’t know you had.
At Lemon Grove Optometry, we use industry-leading diagnostic technology that gives us an unparalleled view of your eyes. This technology allows us to detect eye diseases earlier and with greater accuracy. Our genuine and caring crew of eye care professionals is eager to help protect your eyes. Call us today to book a comprehensive eye exam.
Common Eye Diseases
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve. There are several types of glaucoma, many of which are related to elevated internal eye pressure (IOP).
Glaucoma often develops slowly and with little to no early symptoms. The only way to get a confirmed diagnosis of glaucoma is through a comprehensive eye exam.
Although there’s no cure for glaucoma, early diagnosis and careful monitoring and management can prevent vision loss.
AMD
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that occurs when the macula, the central-most part of the retina, slowly breaks down.
AMD progresses slowly and often without symptoms. It’s common in older adults and is the leading cause of vision loss in Americans over 50. Because it affects the macula, AMD can cause central vision loss, making it difficult to drive, read, recognize faces, and complete close-up work.
Cataracts
Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. Looking through a cataract can be like looking through a foggy window. Although cataracts are easily treated, they remain the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.
Cataracts are a common condition that occurs with normal changes to the eyes as we get older. Mild cataracts can be managed with eyeglasses or contact lenses, but they can be surgically removed if they affect your quality of life.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye,” is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent tissue covering the eye and inner eyelids. The quintessential “pink” color of conjunctivitis is caused by inflammation of the tiny blood vessels in the conjunctiva.
There are several causes of conjunctivitis, but it most commonly occurs due to a bacterial or viral infection or an allergic reaction. Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are highly contagious, so if you have any of the following symptoms, please contact us immediately:
- Red or pink eyes
- Itchy, stinging, gritty eyes
- Discharge from one or both eyes
- Excessive tearing
