Myopia Control: A Technological Approach
Our approach to myopia control relies heavily on the use of technology. It includes various diagnostic tools and modern treatments that help us halt or slow the progression of myopia.
Depending on your child’s specific needs, our team can prescribe myopia management options that include:
- Ortho-k contact lenses
- Peripheral defocus contact lenses
- Low-dose atropine drops
Our team of professionals will guide you through this process, helping you understand each step of the journey.
Vision & Learning
Helping your child see clearly can be crucial to their learning process, and this is where our myopia control methods can prove invaluable. We can provide comprehensive solutions to help counter the challenges myopia may cause for a child’s academic life.
Children who develop myopia before age 12 may also have a higher risk of high myopia. High myopia can increase a child’s lifetime risk of:
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Retinal tears and retinal detachment
- Myopic macular degeneration
These risks make it all the more important to slow the progression of myopia, especially for younger children.
Don’t Miss the Signs of Myopia
Myopia can manifest through various signs and symptoms. It’s important to keep an eye on any developments or changes in behavior, such as:
- Squinting to see distant objects
- Blurry vision when looking at faraway objects
- Headaches
- Eye strain
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Sitting too close to screens
If your child is experiencing these symptoms or you notice these symptoms, a comprehensive eye exam with our team can help. We can determine if myopia control methods such as ortho-k lenses could be beneficial for your child.
Our Myopia Control Methods
If your kids are dealing with nearsightedness, the good news is that there are several options for controlling myopia while their eyes are still growing.
The available myopia control methods include:
- Low-dose atropine drops: This topical eye drop is shown to be effective for myopia control in children between 5 and 18.
- Peripheral defocus contact lenses: These specialty contact lenses create a bullseye in the center of the lens with outer rings that blur peripheral vision. Blurred side vision is believed to slow myopia growth.
- Orthokeratology contact lenses: Ortho-k contact lenses flatten the cornea overnight, providing clear vision when they’re removed in the morning. The vision effects are temporary, and the eye will return to normal if your child stops wearing them. However, ortho-k lenses may also provide a level of permanent reduction for myopia progression.
